How to Travel from Perth to Broome
Perth and Broome aren’t exactly neighbors. To get from Perth to Broome, you’ll have to settle in for a 2,000-plus kilometre trip. There’s not a single “best” way. It all depends on how much time you have, your budget, and your preferred travel style. You’ve got lots of options, but the best method for you depends highly on your itinerary. Do you have a month of annual leave that you’d like to use? Then a road trip might be right up your alley. Or, if you prefer the efficiency of getting from point A to point B as quickly as possible, hop on a flight. There are several ways to get here, and we’ll discuss the pros and cons of each.
Best Time to Travel to Broome
Broome has a tropical climate, with both a wet and a dry season. The wet season lasts from November to April. It’s warm (and some may even say hot) during this time, but be prepared for torrential downpours. The dry season, lasting from May through October is when most people prefer to visit. The days boast more comfortable temperatures and you’ll have blue skies as far as the eyes can see. If you’re keen to see the sites, then visit any time between mid-June to mid-August. During this eight-week span, all of the attractions and roads are typically open.
Cable Beach in Broome has warm temperatures and is swimmable during the dry season. With water temps ranging from 26.8 – 29°C (80.2 – 84.42°F), you’ll never want to get out of the water!
Flying to Broome
Flights from Perth to Boone are surprisingly economical, and the average plane ride is just 2.5 hours. This means you can go on a weekend getaway and still be back in the office on Monday, though you may want to change your plans and stay an extra day! Several airlines, including Virgin and Qantas, service this route, so shop around and look for the best rate. We also suggest booking a nonstop flight. They tend to be cheaper for this route, and they’re obviously faster and more convenient!

Take the Bus to Broome
There’s currently only one bus route to choose, and the route is run by Integrity Coach Lines. The route schedule is subject to change, but at this time, they have service to Perth on Tuesdays and Saturdays with homebound busses running on Thursdays and Saturdays. The advantage of taking the bus is that you get to soak in all the sites, especially as the bus does make several stops along the way, and you can read, text chat and enjoy your travel companions without having to focus on driving and petrol stops.
Ride Shares to Broome
If you’re feeling adventurous, a rideshare is a great option. It’s dramatically cheaper than the other forms of travel, and you might make new friends along the way. There are several places to find rideshare partners, including Gumtree and social networks like Facebook Groups.
If you’re sharing a car, make sure to pack light as there may not be a lot of space in the boot to accommodate everyone’s belongings. Bring along a canteen for water and a few snacks to satisfy your appetite if you’re hungry before a scheduled stop with your travel mates. Just make sure to enquire whether it’s okay to eat or drink in the car before doing so, and avoid packing snacks that have strong smells.
Driving from Perth to Broome
Unless you want to rack up the miles on your car, we recommend renting an automobile for this trip. This option has the most flexibility, and we often suggest it if you have a flexible schedule. There are so many beautiful sights to see along the way, so you may find yourself making frequent stops. If you’re interested in seeing beautiful coastal views, drive up the coast. Or, if you want a different path, the Great Northern Highway will give you views of Outback country. Both are the same distance, and they should take roughly the same amount of time.
Some travelers are concerned whether they need a particular vehicle to make the trip. Fortunately, all the roads along the way are sealed and graded for any two-wheel drive vehicle.
Because of the distance (approximately 2,240 km), we suggest planning about one to two weeks for the trip. If you drive straight through, you could likely make the trip in about 3 to 5 days, but you’re probably going to want to make a few leisurely stops along the way.
